Geo-Information Systems I (Geoinformatik I)

Course given at Göttingen University, Module B.ÖSM.103, 6 credit points, 1 week block course (worth 3 SWS), in German (but can be provided in English, as well)

Understanding and communicating the functioning of the landscapes we live in and of the ecoystems we interact with inevitably requires a systematic and quantitative approach. That approach must consider the spatial dimension and temporal variability of processes, feedbacks, links, patterns and quantities. Key tools to account for those constraints are GIS: Geoinformation Systems, computer software that allow managing, analysing and visualising geodata. Geodata is thematic information with an explicit spatial context, i.e. data describing for example the elevation of our planet or types of landuse.

In this course, you will be introduced to the conceptual and practical foundations of GIS. You will learn the basic workflows of geodata management, processing and presentation. You will work with practical problems and also experience the theoretical background underlying the applied work's scope.
