The environmental shake scape – Listen to the Earth's dynamic surface
When you click on one (or more) of the buttons, you will hear sounds that may sound kind of familiar. These sounds were generated not from microphones, though, but from seismic sensors, recording ground shaking. These ground shaking signals were speeded up and saved as audio files. So, in essence, the sound you will hear is a direct translation of the Earth's shake signals to sound, a process that is called sonification. Below there is a growing library of signals that were produced and recorded at or near the Earth's surface. Feel free to play around with it and combine different signals.
